Jonathan speaks openly and honestly about his experiences. For more than 30 years, he has lived with mental health difficulties and, at times, found himself caught in a cycle of hospital admissions and supported housing.

It’s not been an easy road for Jonathan, a shortage of suitable housing meant his journey took much longer than it could have done. “It was just a long, drawn-out period of time,” Jonathan says.

With the support of health professionals and an intervention from A2Dominion, Jonathan was able to break the cycle and begin rebuilding his life in his own social rent home.

“I was so grateful when I got this place and I'm proud to call it home,” Jonathan says. “It's the first place I've called home since I was a kid.”

For Jonathan, having stable housing provided the foundation for things to turn around for the better. “My recovery journey didn't really start until I was actually in this home,” he says. “That's when I was able to excel in my recovery journey.”

Supporting others

As his confidence grew, Jonathan began volunteering as a Peer Support Worker with the Specialist Community Forensic Team at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, helping others facing similar challenges.

“When I was given the opportunity, I thought this might be the time I can give something back to the community that I've come from,” he says.

Jonathan now speaks at events to raise awareness of mental health issues and the importance of ensuring people have the right support and stable housing. Earlier this year, he shared his recovery journey as a lived‑experience speaker at a Housing Needs workshop.

Jonathan's presentation highlighted how securing a stable home through A2Dominion enabled him to rebuild his life, progress in his recovery, and support others.

At the session he met Darren Lewis, Area Housing Manager at A2Dominion, who attended as a housing provider representative, contributing to discussions on tenancy sustainment, move-on pathways and partnership working across housing, health and voluntary sector services.

Jonathan and Darren were able to connect through their shared commitment to improving housing outcomes, and supporting people who struggle with their mental health to live independently within the community.

A2Dominion has continued to support Jonathan as he rebuilds his life. Darren applied to our resident support fund, which provided Jonathan with the resources to decorate and personalise his home.

Brighter future

Looking ahead, Jonathan is optimistic about the future and is continuing to further his skillset. “I've just completed some training, which is a level of academia I've never worked at before, and it could lead to a degree down the line,” he says.

After years of moving between hospitals and supported accommodation, Jonathan's story highlights the life-changing impact that stable, affordable housing can have on people's lives.

Today, he is not only living well, but helping others to believe a brighter future is possible for them too.
