Following Domestic Abuse Awareness Month in October, we’re highlighting the vital work of our Hospital Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA), Sarah*, who is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

A2Dominion’s Oxfordshire Domestic Abuse Service offers practical and emotional support, both in person and over the phone. We provide safe accommodation and work closely with Oxfordshire County Council, the Police and other partners to help people rebuild their lives.

Sarah* works across the hospital, receiving many referrals from the maternity ward. She provides specialist support to women who may be experiencing domestic abuse, offering a lifeline at a time when they may feel vulnerable and unsure of where to turn.

She said: “Pregnancy can be a worrying time. Abuse can start or get worse during pregnancy, and that can leave women feeling unsafe and unsure of what to do next.

“When I speak to women in the maternity unit, I am open and honest about how I can help. That might mean finding safe accommodation, getting legal advice, counselling, housing support or making a safety plan. If someone needs to leave, I can support them to access the appropriate services to do so safely.”

Last year, 48 women were supported through our domestic abuse service at the hospital.

Jane Clarges, Head of Operations at A2Dominion, said: “Having a dedicated Independent Domestic Violence Advisor in the hospital means we can support women at a critical moment, when they may be frightened, vulnerable and unsure where to turn.

“The support offered is immediate, compassionate and often life-saving. It’s a vital part of our wider domestic abuse service.”
